Buying an Acoustic Guitar -- Laminated or Solid Top?

Sound is initiated from the guitar's top. Choosing what kind of top is a matter of preference, price and tone.

Solid Top

Solid top
Viewed from the edge of the sound hole, you can see the grain lines of the guitar top wrap over the edge. This top is made of one solid piece of wood. It is a high quality guitar top. Solid tops resonate very well and produce a rich sound which tends to improve with age.

Laminated top

Laminated Top
Viewed from the edge of the sound hole, it's easy to see the laminations (layers of woods glued together) in this guitar top. Generally used in beginner guitars, laminated tops are more durable and more forgiving to changes in temperature and humidity. Although they don't resonate as well, today's laminated tops age extremely well and many do sound like a good solid top guitar.
