Buying an Electric Guitar -- Pickups

All electric guitars have pickups, a device placed underneath the strings that convert the string vibrations into electrical energy. This energy is converted back into sound by an amplifier. You manipulate the volume and tone control knobs on the guitar and the amp to achieve a variety of tones and volumes. There are two types of pickups: single coil and double coil or humbucker.

Single-Coil Pickup

Single Coil Pickup
Single coils produce a bright, glassy, and cutting sound most often found in Stratocaster- and Telecaster-style guitars. Many of today's single-coils are hum-free and have extra coil windings for increased power. If you are looking for the Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix tone, the single-coil pickup is for you.

Humbucker Pickup

Humbucker Pickup
Humbuckers are two single-coil pickups wired together to create a higher output and cancel out the hum from other electric sources like fluorescent lights. Most often found in Les Paul-style guitars, they offer the creamy sustain and fat, beefy sound that inspired the wailing rock and metal solos of Jimmy Page, Slash, and Ace Frehley. They're also great for warm jazz.

A guitar can have more than one pickup. You use the selector switch to choose which pickup (or which combination) will be turned on. Most beginner electric guitars (such as the Yamaha Pacifica or Peavey Raptor) offer the Hum/Single/Single combination, giving you an option of pickup sounds for different playing styles.   Cort guitar with 3 single coil pickups3 Single Coil
