Violinists play by balancing the instrument between their chin and shoulder while placing their left hand on the fingerboard to select the notes. The right hand holds the bow. In an orchestra, the violin is played while sitting. In bluegrass, rock/pop, and Celtic/Irish music, musicians play while standing and even dancing.
