The viola is about one seventh larger than the violin and is also held under the chin when played. Because its body is slightly bigger and its strings are slightly thicker than those of the violin, it plays a lower sound. The viola has two jobs in the orchestra; it plays harmonies, but also gets great solos from time to time. A person who plays a viola is called a violist.
