The Yamaha Advantage: Primer, Book 1 and Book 2
by Sandy Feldstein and Larry Clark
| Book with CD |
| Level: Beginner, for band or individual
instruction |
| Publisher: Carl Fischer |
Devised by two of the most experienced writers of material
for young band, Sandy Feldstein and Larry Clark, and published with the
support of instrument manufacturer The Yamaha Corporation of America,
The Yamaha Advantage™ is the band method for today's student.
Innovative Concept
Over 300 band directors participated in the development
and evaluation of this unique method, drawing upon many
years of collective experience. It stresses musicianship
by introducing correct note duration, line direction,
proper phrasing, musical forms and musical terms. The
systematic, yet flexible, approach is designed to focus
students on developing embouchure, breath support and
fingering, using classical music and proven technique
studies from the great composers.
Innovative Design
The Yamaha Advantage™ has an engaging visual
design which enhances the method's effectiveness:
musical note shapes are geared for the beginner, correct
note durations are represented visually, and a
color-coordinated instructional system reinforces new
concepts by relating them to corresponding exercises and
subject matter. It is designed to look like an internet
website. Internet-style "buttons" on the top
of each page emphasize Notes, Theory, Rhythm and
Musicianship while the music remains unobstructed,
uncluttered and easy to read.

About the Primer
This 16-page book is the ideal way to begin
instrumental music instruction with younger students. It is also a very
effective tool for summer and other pre-band courses. It
begins with assembly and caring for the instrument,
posture and tuning. Early pages
emphasize tone production with shape notes, gradually moving to
traditional music notation. Students are quickly able to
perform familiar songs using only five notes. The
included play-along CD accompaniment serves as a model for tone quality and makes practicing fun.
About Book 2
Book 2 follows the pattern of Book 1, with 48 page part
books. It features:
- a continuation of the format of Book 1 with increased emphasis on developing musicianship as well
as technical proficiency
- music drawn from all styles and periods: classical, popular and multicultural
- materials designed to meet the Standards for the Arts in
Music. Composition and improvisation are
encouraged as well as listening, performing and
analyzing.
- nine full band pieces and five mini concert pieces
- a contest solo with piano accompaniment
