-- a modern approach to the
classic Hanon
to make learning fun and new --
For those piano students who remember long hours at
the keyboard practicing "Hanons," let us say
that Alfassy's Jazz Hanons are not the same old
exercises. This book replaces the repetition and
drill-like nature of the original Hanon Virtuoso
Pianist with a set of short, progressive jazz
studies for the aspiring jazz musician (or any piano
student).
This is a technique book, not an "improv"
book -- these graded etudes and exercises are for
developing strength, dexterity, and the necessary
technique in jazz piano styles. Included are elements of
jazz harmony, walking bass, inversions, chromatic
alterations, swing piano styles, bebop, modern voicing,
and a chord symbol appendix.
Bad, sloppy, or just not-up-to-snuff technique is one
of the things that can really hold a piano player back.
Technique is very important. You will be able to progress significantly by working
your way through this book, moving on to the next
exercise as soon as you feel confident with the last. Be
sure to alternate your practice with your favorite jazz
tunes.
